Question

Could you please repeat the Reflection to do before walking meditation, and maybe talk a little about Rebirth in relation to this?

Answer

Steve said to have Compassion and Lovingkindness for all the beings that may die while you do the walking, and he added to adjust the Compassion and Lovingkindness phrase to something like, "if Rebirth is true, may these beings..." and then the Lovingkind wish.

Talk a little bit about Rebirth - that's a big subject. Well, it is taught in the scriptures that all beings are born according to their Kamma. In the scriptures, the Buddha states, "I am heir to my Kamma, born of my Kamma, related to my Kamma, abide supported by my Kamma. Of whatever Kamma I shall do, of that I will be the heir." So according to the teachings, we are born because of our Kamma and we may be reborn because of our Kamma. But since he also taught the Kalama Sutta, that we don't have to just believe the scriptures, we would prefer to look at this particular lifetime and look at cause and effect so that we can see whether this could be true.

So we examine our own mind, and start to see that cause and effect is true. When you think certain things, there will be a result. As you start to understand this cause and effect in our moment to moment life, you also see that what you think, affects how you are going to be reborn in the next moment. So if there is something after the Death of this body, it would seem, to me anyway, that the law of cause and effect would continue. You can see that being aware of your actions, speech and thoughts in this life helps you to live a better life here, being happier, more content and peaceful. And if Rebirth is true, then it will continue to benefit you in the future. As far as the Lovingkind wish for all beings, usually we would like to wish them, if Rebirth is true, a path leading to the ending of suffering as well.
