Isn't moment to moment awareness like knowing and reflecting on mind states and things like the Five Reflections.

Answer

Moment to moment awareness is just Mindfulness, it may not include clear comprehension. Knowing and reflecting on mind states is wisdom, and it is very helpful to have mindfulness supporting it. So there is a difference between moment to moment awareness and clear comprehension and wisdom. This is quite important for us to understand. Because someone may have good moment to moment awareness but may not have clear comprehension, wisdom. Now an example of this may be: suppose a thief is coming mindfully, walking into a room. Mindfully, moment to moment the thief crouches down in front of the safe. Mindfully, moment to moment aware of his intentions to steal; opens the safe. And mindfully, moment to moment aware, takes the money and leaves. This thief had moment to moment mindfulness but not clear comprehension of cause and effect. Therefore mindfulness has to have wisdom to support it, otherwise we may not have any Right View.
