Question

During the D/D (Defusing/Diffusing Compassion and Lovingkindness) meditation last night, I found it easier to imagine someone of a certain age by bringing to mind briefly someone I know that age. Is it OK to do this to help my visualization? Does this take away from making it universal?

Answer

It may help in the beginning part of reflecting to do this, because then we are able to identify more with that age. But after you have done that, it may be helpful to do another reflection like "just like them, so many other people of this age are similar..." That way we can keep it more universal rather than keeping it only to the people we know.
