Question

Is the amount of Dukkha in the world or the universe constant, and does Buddhism see a chance to decrease it if more people would meditate harder?

Answer

As I understand the teachings, if a person came up to the Buddha and asked this question, he would say "I make no comment about it." And then a person would ask another question similar, and he would say "I make no comment about that." And again and again a person would push the point of, "Come on, give me some answers like this!," and he would say "I make no comment about it."

In one particular example, a Buddhist story from the scriptures, a man named Potapada was pushing questions like this. And eventually Potapada said to the Buddha "But why? Why does the Buddha make no comment about this?." And he said something similar to this, "Because that question does not calculate to profit, does not lead to dispassion, does not lead to Wisdom, will not lead one to the right path, will not lead one to enlightenment. Therefore it is I make no comment about it."

Then Potapada said something like, "Well then what do you make comments about?" And the Buddha replied, "I teach about the existence of Dukkha, I teach about where Dukkha comes from, I teach about how it goes away, and I teach the path of how it will go away."

Potapada then asked, "Why do you teach that?" And the Buddha replied, "Because that, Potapada, is calculated to profit, it will lead to dispassion, it will lead to peace, it will lead to enlightenment. Therefore it is, Potapada, I make a statement regarding that."

Now in reference to this question, as to whether the amount of Dukkha in the world is constant or whatever, it is just one of these questions that really is not worth getting answered, because if someone says "Yes, it is," and another person says "No, it isn't," then it doesn't really help you to let go of your anger, it doesn't help you to let go of your fear, it doesn't help you to develop more Compassion... the real practice is to work now with what you have to do, rather than worrying about the entire universe getting fixed or not.
