Question

What are the eight worldly conditions?

Answer

The eight worldly conditions or eight worldly dhammas are praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and pain, and fame and obscurity. Most people are trying to obtain and base their positive self-image on getting praise, gain, pleasure and fame and base their unhappiness and negative self-image on receiving blame, loss, pain and obscurity. It's a very important practice to learn how to contemplate the eight worldly conditions. You will learn much about the working of the ego. A little bit later in the retreat we're going to be having guided meditations on this.
