Question

Please can you remind me of the pattern of Sympathetic Joy meditation or give another one?

Answer

Certainly we'll be giving more Sympathetic Joy meditation near the ending of this retreat. The pattern of Sympathetic Joy meditation is that we try to bring to mind the good qualities of ourselves and others. Try to feel some Sympathetic Joy with these qualities. Then we do a Sympathetic Joy wish. The one I use in the ten day retreat is, "In times of discouragement may I be able to remember my good qualities, feel joy in them, in the gradual awakening and my inner potential. Feeling joy in the teachings, may it give me a refuge and give me confidence and Energy to continue."

Yesterday I talked about a short form, "Isn't it wonderful!." It's basically learning how to appreciate the good qualities of others. Often Sympathetic Joy meditation is more difficult to do for many people because of the factor of competition in the world. Because trying to contemplate the good qualities of others sometimes confronts one's own lack of self-worth, it's quite important to include ourselves and contemplate our good qualities. Especially if we are going to overcome the quality of jealousy. When we look closely, Sympathetic Joy is very important for our Compassion and Lovingkindness wish because it is the good qualities of others that is going to enable them to end their Dukkha.
