Question

Could you please elaborate on the dependent arising nature of Dukkha, give an example, especially for Dukkha relating to Desire?

Answer

Sometimes people ask us in interviews, how to let go of certain types of desire that they have, that they can't seem to let go of. Often we ask them to reflect on the dependent arising nature of Dukkha concerned with this particular desire so they will broaden their view a little, and change their view of the desire as being pleasant to being Dukkha.

A classic example is the Dukkha of smoking. We try to actually get these people to understand how it came to them and the suffering involved in that, we ask them to think of the beings that the cigarette companies test their products on. For example, I heard once that cigarette companies forced rabbits to inhale cigarette smoke so the rabbits would get lung cancer, so the companies could test fixing the lung cancer their products caused and then try to cure the lung cancer after human beings had already gotten it, thus they could continue to sell their products.

Another thing to consider is the dependent arising nature of Dukkha. Regarding the desire for drugs, to actually trace back this particular thing many love so much or want so much, trace it back to all the people, all the beings, where it came from, all the beings involved and all the Dukkha involved in that particular chain. Especially in the drug trade, there's a lot of suffering involved in that, so we start to change our view of that as being pleasant, to seeing it in a different way. It becomes a source of Dukkha because we see the Dukkha behind this particular object.
