Question

Confidence inspiring objects. Rosemary mentioned reflecting on this when ill. Are they general things for example, Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, or did she use something more personal?

Answer

There are quite a few confidence inspiring objects which include to reflect on the Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, reflecting on your good Kamma, having Sympathetic Joy meditation, reflecting on how fortunate you are, making a dedication, etc. If your dedication has been strong, you have been doing it a long time, just the dedication itself can give you more confidence because it reminds you of other aspects of life, reminds you of the practice which is the Dhamma in particular. In essence, find out for yourself, use all the different techniques and see which ones do give you confidence. Some of these we mention, although they give us confidence, they may not give you confidence if you do not believe in them enough. For example, if you really don't believe that you are fortunate, then there is no hope that that meditation is going to actually help you to have more joy when you're reflecting on it. So you have to actually understand them as to whether they are true or not. Then if you believe them, they really, really give you more strength.
