Question

What is attachment made of? Fear of loss or desire?

Answer

Attachments can be positive or negative, attachments can be wanting, attachment can be not wanting. There can be attachment to a certain way of living that pushes something away or attachment to a certain way of living that we want something. So there can be fear of loss involved, there can be desire involved, there can be aversion, there can be worry, there can be almost any kind of hindrance in the sense of getting attached.

We might get attached to a state of mind that likes to have doubt just so we have something to talk about. We've had people coming to interviews with the same doubt, over and over the same doubt. We've given the same answer, variations, but the same answer. They kept coming again with the same doubt, they just like to have doubt. So attachment can go anywhere and it's not always very clear, though the deeper cause why it's there is the simple fact of wanting to be something.

So people can be attached to anything at times. Remember when I mentioned in the 10-day retreat about self-pity? Now almost everyone can see self-pity is a very detrimental quality, but there are people who are attached to it because they don't understand the Dukkha of it. So we need to understand more of the Dukkha of whatever we are attached to, this will help us to let go of the attachment.
