Question

Sometimes a hindrance like planning comes up frequently, not all at once, but again and again, and most times I note it, then it disappears quickly. Is it enough just to note it, or does it still have an effect through it's coming up so often, and would I need a balancing Reflection at some point?

Answer

After noting it and perhaps feeling the Dukkha of not being here, wanting not to be here, and having a bit of compassion for oneself, it may be helpful if it comes up again and again to balance it with Death Reflection. But not to just shoot it down with a Reflection quickly. That is, we have to note it first, become more objective with it, try to understand its painfulness, its pulling us away from the present. Sometimes planning makes the present seem unbearable. We can balance these thoughts with Death Reflection, asking ourselves the classic three questions; "Is Death definite? When is it coming? At that moment what has any meaning?" Or simply, "What is the only definite thing that will happen to you in the future?," so that the mind will get more on your side. But if it comes again and again, it seems that it is a strong tendency in the mind to seek happiness in the future, so balancing it with a Reflection is very helpful.
