How can I find out that my practice is in balance?

Answer

A lot of this depends on your experience. You usually find out when you're off balance, because Dukkha starts to come real strong. Maybe if you're doing too much tranquility meditation, you may not feel so much energy or motivation in your life, becoming a little bit complacent. If you do too much of the Reflections, then depending on what type of Reflections, you can find that you're getting a little bit more agitated than normal, a little bit more agitation in the body and the mind. Then you may see that you need to be a little more balanced, bringing walking meditation in and a bit more of the breathing to balance that. Some people can find more balance and calm in Compassion and Lovingkindness meditation, depending on their character, because all of us have different personalities. So a lot of it tends to come from experience. Steve will be talking more about balance tomorrow night, so that may help you as well.
