Question

Should we be reflecting during the day, like when we're washing our laundry, et cetera?

Answer

In general, there's two parts to the practice. Developing wise thought, and letting go of thought, being basically mindful of what you're doing. Don't forget that side of the practice. Just like you will not want to build a special complicated house with only a hammer, you don't want to build a special complicated house without a hammer. So it's helpful not to be doing Reflection all the time.

Wash your laundry to get into body mindfulness. Just be there with that. If something, though, does stimulate the mind, stop the washing laundry and reflect for a little while. And when you're done, go back to washing the laundry just with mindfulness and all. There is a danger in reflecting too much when you're doing normal activities during the day. And that is that you might forget what it is you're actually doing. The classic is, chopping vegetables, and you have got a carrot. And you reflect too much and you just cut your finger instead. We're going to forget what we're doing if we're reflecting too much.

This is also why we don't encourage reflecting while you're doing walking meditation. Imagine you're doing Compassion and Lovingkindness meditation while you're walking, and you get very absorbed in the thoughts. You're not going to see the ant that you just stepped on. So although you're thinking compassionate and lovingkind thoughts, you actually did not do a compassionate action, because you were unmindful. So if you can, separate the two, when you reflect be in a stationary posture don't be doing much, when you have something to do, use more body awareness.

However, on the side of that, is to have very short Reflections to come up while you're doing something. For example, one little special Mindfulness activity that we've given to some people just for their own personal use, is that whenever you enter a hall where there's other people, do a Compassion and Lovingkindness short wish. Just as you walk in, wish everybody well. Walk into the dining hall and do it, walk into the meditation hall and do it. You can vary it as well. When you walk into the bathroom, do it for the insects, creatures in the wells and such things, do it in your dorm, wherever. That's one time when you could use a very short brief Reflection as you're still moving, as you're walking. Try not to lose track of what you're doing, though, especially in the dining hall, with that little step. Be mindful as well, but a little bit of reflection here and there doesn't hurt.
