Question

Can you talk about the value of watching healing in one's practice?

Answer

I'm not totally certain what that means, so if this is answered in a different way than asked, you can ask it again later and clarify it. As to the healing, the mental healing, being able to see some of our own healing. One of the nice things about a retreat, as all of you know, is that you can't talk to each other. So your reactions as to what happens is all yours, and you get to watch very clearly how you react. Whether your sitting spot is taken in the hall, whether your sitting mat is taken, whether your favorite walking track is taken, all these different things give you an opportunity to watch your reactions.

Now, when you see a good change in your reactions, to a certain extent, that means you have had a healing of some degree going on, that you have actually solved some of the anger that's been part of your life, and you have replaced it with Compassion, with Lovingkindness, with acceptance, renunciation, whatever it may be. You know, it's classic because all the sitting mats don't have your name written on it, that in every single retreat, one or two people, even more sometimes, writes us a note and says, "My sitting mat's been taken, what do I do?" Fine, we get them another mat.

But some people are attached to the mat they were given and they're angry, and if they see that mat underneath somebody else, and they know it was their mat, it's like, "Ooh, How could they?! They should know better." Now if you actually see in your mind, that you walk in and think, "Oh, my mat's gone. Gee, they're sitting on my mat. I guess, they didn't know that that was my mat, I wonder where their mat is, oh it's a fat one against the wall, it's the only one not being used, but I don't want a fat one. I'll sit on the floor, and later I'll write a note." You know, if you can see that your mind reacts in such a nice peaceful way, then to me, in that sense, there's been a healing of your own level of aversion going on. Those are nice things to watch, in the practice, when you can actually see that your normal conditioning, which may be unbeneficial, all the sudden changes and you have reacted in such a nice beneficial way. So that may not be exactly the answer, but that's something really nice to watch that's a type of healing in your practice.
