Question

I once listened to a talk by a Theravadin monk who was talking about freedom. He told us that there is no free will because everything is conditioned. If that is so, why are we making all these efforts?

Answer

This is a very good question. Why are you making all these efforts? Are you actually doing it out of your own free will or not? Or is it something you just have to do, you can't do anything otherwise? It is not a question I can answer, because I have asked a similar question to other teachers and they couldn't answer it.

When you think that we are all conditioned, who you are right now is due to your past conditioning. And if somebody says to you, "OK, make a choice. Do either A or do B," you're going to make that choice based on all of your past conditioning. Is that really free will? Or are you totally conditioned and you are only going to make a certain choice, because that's simply all you can really make because of your past conditioning? OK, it can kind of go around in a circle. It can become an intellectual argument because we can't get an answer that is satisfactory.

So, in other words, throw out the thought of whether you do have a free will or you don't have a free will as being a big issue. Rather, get back to the practice level. Do you have anger? How can you let go of it? Do you have greed? How can you let go of it? OK, you know you can at least work on these things. Whether you are doing it with a free will or not, you'll have to find out when you get enlightened!
