Question

How can I stimulate the "To care and not to care" reflection?

Answer

Often, similar to what we wrote on the paper with advice about how to do the reflections, is just to go through your life, and go through other people's lives, and consider when people were off balance with their Compassion and Equanimity. A typical example of someone who was balanced is Mother Teresa, having lots of Compassion in India, doing lots of good. Opposite to her were the people who blew up the Oklahoma city building. Supposedly they had some sort of Compassion in the beginning, "I want to save America, it is going the wrong way." But it went into violence instead. So that was very different, maybe it was a similar seed of Compassion but it went the wrong way.

Basically, look through your own life too. When were you off balance? When were you caring too much? When did you get angry because what you wanted to fix wasn't fixable? When did you get caught up in grief and it was just too overwhelming? Stimulate, just keep trying to look for more examples. And it is an inward and outward reflection. What that means is: inward, we look at our life, we look at our experiences, and outward, we look at other people's lives, other people's experiences. Use examples from the newspapers, from the magazines, from our friends, family and so on. There are heaps and heaps of examples to keep you going.
