Question

Can you talk a little about how self-doubt hinders the practice?

Answer

Doubt is the biggie of all the hindrances. We've said that before. Self-doubt will wipe you out: "I can't do it! There's no way I can do it! It's impossible!" You're finished. As long as you have that attitude you're finished. But as long as you have the attitude: "I can try, and I can go ask somebody for help," then you're not finished. When you get caught in self-doubt, you've got to get out of it somehow. Usually you've got to go and talk to someone who will inspire you.

One old student many years ago used to refer to the interviews as a "Dhamma fix." A "fix" is a term I believe used for drug addictions and such things. They felt they got super-energized whenever they got their interviews, thus a "Dhamma fix." And it often does (another play on English words), it often will "fix" you. When you're stuck in doubt, one of the biggest things to do is go to a Kalyanamitta, a good wise spiritual friend and let them help you get over it, see it at a different angle. Because otherwise if you stay with doubt you're going to get stuck. Especially self-doubt, it says: "You just can't do it!"
