Question

Do you believe that someone can attain enlightenment without encountering the Buddha Dhamma in that particular lifetime, in other words, Hindus, Christians? Do you believe there are currently enlightened beings in Thailand or the wider Buddhist Sangha?

Answer

By definition, it's impossible for someone to get enlightened outside of the Buddha Dhamma, outside of these teachings. Because basically no other teaching goes the depth of the Buddha-Dhamma. Someone just won't have that wisdom factor, they will have more blind belief, faith orientated. They can go a certain way with Paramis, but on the wisdom level it doesn't go far enough. By definition, no one can get fully enlightened outside of the Buddha-Dhamma. And I won't even hold that to just being fully enlightened, by definition it's not even possible to get to the first level of the four levels of enlightenment. It's not even possible to get to the first level, because someone who reaches the first level, actually by definition again, is someone who has absolute belief and faith in the Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha. That's part of the actual definition.

So, as to whether I personally believe it or not, it's not relevant, it's not important. Using the Kalama Sutta, if we meet somebody who's wise, no matter what they call themselves, let's test their ability, let's see if they can help us. If they can't help us, we go to somebody else who's wise.

"Do you believe there are currently enlightened beings in Thailand or the wider Buddhist Sangha?" I'm not sure. A lot of Thais believe that some of their teachers are enlightened. We've been to some of those teachers, and we just can't definitely say "There's an Arahant" (which is the word for fully enlightened).

Our apologies if there are any errors in the above text. If anything seems to be wrong or confusing in any way, please feel free to contact the teachers for further clarification.
