Question

After about 10 months of traveling I feel homesick, how do I let go of and prevent this type of Dukkha?

Answer

I don't know if every one of you here has traveled. I know a lot of you have, so, you can identify with some of that. So "How do I let go and prevent some of this type of Dukkha?" Feeling homesick, what is "homesick" really? We're missing a sight, we're missing a sound, we're missing a taste, we're missing a touch, we're missing a smell, an odor, something that our sense doors like and that we haven't had for a while. I mean, you could get homesick here, you're not in your real home, you could miss your bed. I don't know how nice your beds are, ours are what you're sitting on. They're pretty good here, I'm not homesick for my bed. You could be homesick for your food; your diet here is one thing, your diet at home might be different. Homesick for your view, you can experience homesickness right here, and on and on.

So how does the practice work with that? Memory, memory, remembering, remembering, desire, desire. Even if you have your view, even if you're sitting in the hall and you start thinking, "Oh, I'd love to see my dog!" and I come up to you and say, "OK, here's a picture of your dog." Are you happy now? Is that going to solve it? Of course not! And even if you're sitting there and you're wishing for your dog and the dog comes and you get to pet it for a while. Are you going to get bored after a while? Even when we're homesick and we want something, and then we get it, after a while we don't want it anymore. So if you look a bit deeper into what homesickness actually is, it's a desire, it's a craving for a sight, a sound, and in the practice, we just try to note "desire, desire, craving, craving", or whatever, and see it as just another passing moment.
