Question

Blind faith: does Buddhism have as much as other religions?

Answer

No. Theravadin Buddhism is considered to be the path of Wisdom. However, Faith does play a part in Theravadin Buddhism. But I'll use the Pali word Saddha, it doesn't mean blind faith, rather it means confidence. Confidence arising from seeing the practice work within oneself. There's a certain amount of confidence arising, faith arising, as we see the practice working within ourselves, in considering that some of the theories, that we haven't directly experienced yet, could be possible. This is the type of faith that Theravadin Buddhism has: the faith that arises as we work the practice, seeing the truth of the Four Noble Truths experientially within ourselves and getting confidence, a deep sense of experiential confidence in the Noble Eightfold Path as a path leading out of suffering. And then because of this experiential confidence arising from seeing suffering and the ending of it within ourselves, we develop a confidence or faith that there's the possibility for the ending of all suffering.

This type of faith is very important in Theravadin Buddhism. A confidence in one's highest potential, which is kind of revolutionary really, kind of radical.

We're not actually asked by the Buddha to believe any theories or philosophical things about ultimate reality or the beginning of time or the end of time or any of these things. In fact Steve talks tonight about the Kalama Sutta, where we don't have to believe just because there's a tradition, an unbroken succession of teachers, report or hearsay and all the other things.

So blind faith is certainly not the kind of faith we want in Theravadin Buddhism, but a confidence arising from spiritual understanding and a confidence that there could be the ending of all suffering if we continue to walk the Noble Eightfold Path and continue to purify the mind from greed, hatred and ignorance.
