Question

How can we balance the D/D reflection with regards to pain? I seem to do a lot of this one in the sitting periods.

Answer

We can balance it with trying to observe Unpleasant Physical Sensation using awareness. The D/D reflection helps to change the view but we also have to use other techniques to be able to learn how to observe it moment to moment. So, if we are only using the D/D, it may help us balance the mind at that time, but it may not make the pain go away. There has to be a certain amount of learning how to be with it, and observe the unpleasant physical sensations in the ways that Steve talks about in the normal retreat. Learning how to observe it, watch it moment to moment. Sometimes old students forget about doing this particular type of practice and depend totally on Wise Reflection, but this is a very important part of the practice to remember. Learning how to note sensation as sensation, learning how to observe it.

If you are getting a lot of pain in the sitting periods we also have to see if it is arising due to a particular physical difficulty, because if we are pushing a physical problem it may not be appropriate. We have to see whether changing our sitting posture may be necessary. There may be an attitude challenge, in the sense that we may think that pain should not arise in the sitting periods, and therefore we may not have that much patience with it. There may be that expectation and frustration there, so we may have to examine our hindrances.

There is quite a lot involved in this particular question so if the person who wrote it wishes, it is probably appropriate to ask this question in an interview so we can examine how to help you more.
