Question

What are some methods we can use for dealing with feelings of self-righteousness?

Answer

Self-righteousness to me, means that somebody did something to us, we didn't like it, and we wanted to exert our own self, I'm right, self-righteousness. Often self-righteousness is a waste of time. Sometimes it's not. Sometimes it's very much placed in something that has to be done. I am right, those people are wrong, if they continue with what they're doing, more harm is going to come. This is exactly the reason that in most countries around the world, and in Thailand in particular, very strongly enforce their laws against defamation of character. Although we only see the paper generally about once a month, regularly we see articles about somebody put in jail because they slandered the king, they slandered a famous monk, they slandered a famous politician, whatever. Very strict over there. Very strict in America, I don't know how hard it is here. But when we know that we're right and someone else is wrong, and we can prove it, we can go about being self-righteous in that sense. However, there's a difference between being self-righteous out of compassion and being self-righteous out of "I'm going to win, I'm going to beat them up!" There's a big difference in that. If we're motivated by compassion, it's much better.

We can have more equanimity with every bit of blame, and maybe at times we bring forth some energy to correct it, correct the problem if it's a bigger problem.
