Question

What is an unpleasant spiritual feeling? Meditation pain? I guess Moral Shame? Could you please talk more about it?

Answer

Unpleasant Spiritual Feeling. Moral Dread and Moral Shame can be two. Another unpleasant spiritual feeling is understanding there's more to be done. That we're not enlightened yet. That's called the Burden of the Practice. But it's actually a lot better to have the Burden of the Practice than the burden of all these unpleasant mind-states without knowing what to do with them. That is an unpleasant spiritual feeling knowing that there's more to be done and that's the Burden of the Practice.

There's another one listed in the Scriptures, the Burden of Renunciation. We've tried to help you with that burden by teaching you ways to see that it's through Compassion to ourselves that we let go. We start to see the advantages of letting go, the advantages of living a simple life and not needing so much. Perhaps you had some unpleasant spiritual feeling yesterday when I was leading the "Waking up in the Morning" Compassion/Lovingkindness meditation. Opening to the enormity of Dukkha in this way is sometimes unpleasant. Understanding the cycle of birth and death is sometimes unpleasant.

We need to have strong emotional stability and the development of the unselfish emotions, The Four Brahma Viharas, to be able to deal with these types of unpleasant spiritual feeling. Because if we don't expand the capacity of our heart with the unselfish emotions then you will get overwhelmed by wisdom as it opens to the Characteristics of Existence of Impermanence, of Dukkha, and Anatta, of nothing being mine. With more emotional maturity that the unselfish emotions bring, we can open to these characteristics with a feeling of stability, we know there's a way out of suffering. In these ways, unpleasant spiritual feelings can arise as our wisdom increases, but if we're having a balanced practice and take care of our emotional stability by developing the unselfish emotions, then our heart is bigger to be able to deal with them.
