Question

Of the few stories I've heard about the Buddha's previous lives as different Bodhisattvas, I don't remember hearing a story about a female Bodhisattva. Was he always male? In Vietnam I saw some statues of a Buddha who looked like a woman. Do you know more about that?

Answer

I think it's recorded that he was always male when he was a Bodhisattva. As far as the statues in Vietnam, I haven't been to Vietnam so I can't really comment on those statues. But I have also seen some Buddha statues that seem to have female characteristics. It may be just the artistic style, I'm not sure.
