Question

What techniques are there for integrating great bursts of energy, sometimes alarming ones? Also, small ones that fall off and get lost in the shuffle.

Answer

This depends on what types of bursts of energy you are talking about. If it's a restless type of energy, restlessness, then we may need to bring more tranquility with calming techniques. Great bursts of energy coming from joy, may be energy coming from the hindrances, or coming from the Factors of Enlightenment, so it really does depend on what this energy is coming from. In the Satipattana Sutta, especially in the fourth foundation of mindfulness, the Buddha asks us to be aware of the Hindrances. He also asks us to be aware of the Factors of Enlightenment, when they are present, when they are not present, and how to make them stronger. When it comes to bursts of energy coming from the Factors of Enlightenment, sometimes this happens when a certain amount of joy arises in the practice, then energy arises. By integrating the energy, by directing it with an appropriate reflection, we can actually use that energy to go more deeply into the wisdom side. Or if it is too agitating, we may have to actually focus more on the tranquility side. So this will depend on how sensitive we are to these Factors of Enlightenment as they are occurring. If you find it's difficult, it may be appropriate to talk to us abut it in the interviews, to see what are appropriate techniques for you.

Concerning bursts of energy coming from restlessness - sometimes there is the tendency when we get restless to feel like we have a lot of energy and we find it difficult to be still, we feel confined. At that time, it's very helpful to use a bit of what we call the universalizing technique, the D/D method (I think Steve is giving it tonight). It may be very helpful to understand that there are other people in the world who are confined and not just ourselves, and that we actually aren't confined that much compared to others. In this way, we learn how to bring up compassion for that energy.

Concerning the small ones that end up getting lost in the shuffle - I'm not quite sure what getting "lost in the shuffle" is. However, with the small ones that often get lost, if it happens to be the factors of enlightenment, it's very helpful for it not to get lost. Mindfulness helps prevent us from losing it. Again, it depends on what type of person you are, and what is occurring in the meditation. So for us to know exactly what technique may be helpful for you, I also suggest that you ask us in the interviews about this one.
