Question

How does the wisdom you hear/read about become wisdom of heart?

Answer

It becomes the wisdom of the heart by practice. I don't know of any other way. Because what you hear and what you read is somebody else's wisdom. It may help us and guide us, but it has to become our own. We have to understand it through practice. Otherwise it remains the Buddha's wisdom or somebody else's wisdom. So we have to practice and continue to practice and practice, so that it becomes an understanding arising from experience. However all types of wisdom are useful, because it is through hearing the Dhamma that we often get a map. I remember the first time I heard the Four Noble Truths, it was like "wow!" Because in our life we had seen the first two Noble Truths, Dukkha exists, the cause of Dukkha, but we didn't know the way out of Dukkha. So by hearing the Dhamma you get a glimpse into the possibility, but then you have to walk the path, and that's involved with the Eightfold Path.

So it's a matter of the wisdom you hear and read becoming the wisdom of the heart by walking the Noble Eightfold Path, because this is the path the Buddha gave us, the path to wisdom. The Noble Eightfold Path, if some of you have forgotten, starts with Right Understanding. So this actually begins on the level of hearing, understanding intellectually the Four Noble Truths, the Law of Kamma, that all actions, speech and thoughts will have a result. Then Right Intention: thoughts that are directed towards renunciation, directed towards harmlessness, free from ill-will and cruelty. So how do these thoughts arise in our life? We have to develop the unselfish emotions, that is the practice. Then there's Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood. We cannot have Right Speech, Right Action and Right Livelihood unless we have Right Intention. Speech that is harmless, actions that are harmless, livelihoods that are harmless to ourselves and others. Right Effort: the Four Great Efforts, the effort to prevent, let go, develop and maintain. Right Mindfulness, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness; and Right Concentration. We have to walk the Noble Eightfold Path so that Wisdom starts to arise in our life.
