Question

Do you advise, for when you don't understand or misunderstand a guided meditation instruction by missing a word or not knowing a word, to do D/D, thinking that there are people who understand less than us, or are not taught at all?

Answer

Absolutely! Anytime you feel a bit of Dukkha, you missed hearing something, you missed out on something, do the D/D method, think of other people in world who are missing out worse than you are. Every retreat, right? The retreat's in English. How many of you are not native-English speakers? You're going to miss words. It feels uncomfortable, we wish we had better English and so on. By coming back for more retreats you start to pick up on what you've missed out on before. But there is a feeling of, "Oh, I didn't get it." OK, that's Dukkha, that's Dukkha centered around "me". Anytime you have Dukkha centered around "me", open it up and think of other people. We still may not know what the heck Steve or Rosemary said up there on the stage, right? But at least we're not feeling bad that we missed it that time. We'll write a note later, we'll listen more later. You don't have to feel the Dukkha in the moment just because we didn't get something that we wanted to get. As I said yesterday, the D/D method is extremely powerful, it works for all mental, all physical problems that you ever have, and it will help you get rid of that big one, self-pity.
