Question

Always I forget to do Compassion/Lovingkindness reflection while entering a room, but I remember later. Any advice how to make my mindfulness faster?

Answer

The four stages of mindfulness; in the first stage, try to remember after you have done it, and bring up your awareness, "Ahh, I missed it that time, I have got to try harder next time." Now some little things can be used to speed it up. Take your watch, I just put mine on, it is upside down. I often do that when I am in the West, so I can perk up my mindfulness, so that I can remember something. Usually it is death reflection that I use it for; again we are talking about a special mindfulness activity. So when I look at my watch, yes, it is upside down but I can still read that it is 9:40. It simply gives me a little shift to try to remember something.

Notes, I always write down notes to myself, I have them in my pants' pocket. I used to put them in my shirt pocket, I would remember, I would look at what was going on. After awhile it got comfortable, I would forget to read them, I would forget to look at my notes. So I shifted and put them in my pants pocket, which wasn't good enough by itself, so I put a clip on it that makes my pants bulky, it's uncomfortable. That is a way I remember things more often. Use these things, they are very helpful. You want to remember Compassion/Lovingkindness before you go into a hall, say to the Dining Hall, well, what do you normally walk into there with? Your dishes. So why not do something different with your dishes, when you leave your dishes, so that when you come back to get them they look different. Then they make you think, "Why are they different, what do I have to remember?"
