Question

Is development of our Paramis depending on Right Understanding and Right Attitude, Right Effort, or what else? Is it not when one is practicing meditation for long times it comes automatically with? What can we do and focus on?

Answer

The development of the Paramis does indeed depend on developing the Noble Eightfold Path, they are interrelated. It is just a different way of looking at the Dhamma. It is like a diamond. You look at one side and it has small cuts and you look at another side and it has big cuts. The Ten Paramis and the Noble Eightfold Path are just different ways of looking at the same teaching. So the Paramis do depend on the development of the Noble Eightfold Path.

If you practice meditation for a long time, no, nothing will come automatically. Even though you may have been practicing meditation for a long time, it may be wrong meditation. So you have to be careful here. There are a lot of teachers, I have read them, I have sat in front of them, they will say if you practice this type of meditation everything else will come later automatically. No, that is not written anywhere in the scriptures, it is not my understanding, it is not the understanding of some other experienced people whom I know. You have to be practicing properly, you have to practice in a balanced way. Things will arise but not everything automatically arises.
