Question

With walking meditation I have the choice to look 2 meters in front of me and keep my neck straight, but I can't see the ants I am stepping on. In order to avoid this killing I have to bend my neck and that cause me pain. What is the best thing to do?

Answer

If 2 meters is too far in front, 1.5 meters, maybe a meter and an anticipation of the course of the ants. Sometimes if there are quite a lot of ants we may have to slow down to anticipate where they are going to go. One has to find the balance concerning this and understand that even if we anticipate as best we can, there may be times we step on them by mistake. Ants tend to scurry, and its not our intention to kill them. But certainly if 2 meters is too far for you to anticipate the course of the ants then a little bit closer to you is helpful. It is not actually keeping the neck straight, straight would be up like this, so there is a little bit of a looking down there.
