Question

During the guided meditation about the eight worldly dhammas, I could not find any times that when I would rather have pain, when I feel I deserve to suffer in some way. What did you mean with that?

Answer

Sometimes when people have a tendency towards guilt, a tendency towards self-hatred, then they feel that they deserve to suffer, and that by suffering they somehow are working out this guilt. I am glad that this person doesn't want to suffer, but sometimes there's a tendency in some human beings that they would like some strong feeling rather than neutral feeling, because it's too boring to have neutral feeling. If they can't have pleasant feeling, they would prefer to have pain, because at least these two extremes make them feel alive. So, there are some people who act in these ways. I think if you don't have this in yourself then perhaps to look to see whether there has been a tendency sometimes when you are feeling guilty or feeling that you did something not so skillful that you deserve to suffer in some way.
