Question

Can flowers, stones experience pain?

Answer

According to Buddhism, no. Modern science has done experiments in laboratories with plants. They have turned on music, put fire next to plants, etc. They believe they have proven that plants have sensitivity, a type of consciousness, that reacts to music, fire and other things. Buddhism explains this in another way. In the forest, around the plants, even in Thailand they consider in doorframes, there exist invisible living beings, like fairies, ghosts or spirits. On occasion people believe they see them. In Thailand, especially in the older homes, and even at the bathrooms that we have in Thailand, there is a little ledge at the bottom of the doorframe you have to step over because the Thais believe there are beings that live in the doorframes and as they are there to help protect the house, this ledge prevents you stepping on them. Take it for what you want, but this is a theory. And Buddhism also says there are beings, in a different dimension to us, that live around every bush, every tree, and that's their home. So when fire comes close to that plant, the beings become agitated. When nice music comes close to the plant, the beings become calm. This is what Buddhism says the scientists are experiencing when they test the plants and see these different vibrations happening. According to Buddhism, flowers and stones cannot experience pain. They are an inanimate item with no consciousness.
