Question

How can statistics be used in Meditation?

Answer

I am not sure what this really means, but statistics can get used in meditation in the sense that you do Compassion/Lovingkindness meditation, and you want to understand the universality of a certain problem. If we have an understanding about the statistics of serious problems, then we can understand the enormity of the Dukkha in the world. Sometimes, especially when we are too close to our own problems, learning some statistics can be very helpful.

Steve is very good at using statistics, having a mathematical background, and he is very good at quoting them to people in the interviews. I don't know whether any of you have had that yet. For example, once someone was feeling very sorry for themselves, so Steve quoted to them that over half of the people in the world live on less than two Euros a day. He found that statistic in a newspaper. So by remembering statistics, and sharing them with others, this can help our Dhamma growth greatly.
