Question

In the back of my mind is the idea that acceptance is an alibi not to act and that acting is the main purpose of life. So what is acceptance actually? How to find a balance between acceptance and the necessity to act?

Answer

It is important to find a balance between these because yes, sometimes acceptance may lead us not to act when it would be wise for us to act.

We have to understand the situation so we know whether acceptance is beneficial or acting is beneficial. If we act, it has to come from the compassionate intention, not from aversion. If we just act out of aversion or other unwise thoughts then we are not going to get the best results.

I believe, the point here is to look closely at our intention so we can see whether we want to act because we just don't like the situation or whether we'd truly like to help the situation.

It is very helpful to use the Four Noble Truths to investigate into any situation in order to understand our intention and know what to do. Because unless we use the Four Noble Truths, we may not know the true cause of it and know how to act in order to end Dukkha, if we choose to act.

When you are in situations like this, it is helpful to actually see the Dukkha and ask yourself, "What is the true cause of my Dukkha?" This will help you have to see whether ignorance or craving in yourself or others is causing it. Then ask yourself, "What do I know about how to end this according to Right Speech and Right Action based in compassion to myself and others?"

Yet we also have to investigate to see whether we have the power to change it or we do not have the power to change it. That needs a certain amount of wisdom. If we see that we do not have the power to change the situation, then acceptance is the best solution. If we don't accept, we will create more Dukkha for ourselves.
