Question

I face challenges with structuring my life around the meditation practice. How can I resolve to become more strict regarding this?

Answer

In order to be able to do this we have to understand how important it is compared to some of the other things that we consider most important. Unless we reflect more deeply about this, it's very difficult to remember. So if you have some difficulty I suggest a type of meditation concerning three reflections.

The first one is to make a Dedication of Intention. I dedicate my intention to develop the Paramis as much as I can so I can be of the most benefit to myself and all beings. You make this reflection and then combine it with death and impermanence reflection. Particularly death, ok, considering I might die today. The third reflection is to combine it with Compassion and Equanimity, to care and not to care.

Then we reflect on some of the things that prevent us from doing our meditation practice and actually ask ourselves these questions: "This particular thing that I am so interested in doing prevents me from doing my meditation practice. If I were to die today, how important is it for developing my intention of developing the Ten Paramis. Is it that important?" And if we find that the answer is: "No, it's not," then we develop a resolution within ourselves, which is one of the Paramis, to care a bit less about this. We develop a resolution to care more about the meditation practice and our inner direction.

We can go through our life and look at the things that are pulling us in other directions so we cannot find the time to do what we want to do with our meditation practice. And we keep asking these questions: How does it relate to my dedication in my life, does it help me to develop the Paramis in a deeper way? Considering I might die today, how important is it compared to my meditation practice? Having understood by asking a wise question of ourselves (as I taught last night in my introduction talk), a lot of the time it's a matter of figuring out how to ask ourselves the right questions to get the answer.

Going through our lives and making a commitment to have more equanimity towards things that are not so important, and develop more compassion to ourselves to care more about the things that are important. Because as I've seen in my life, there's so many things that have to be done and so many things that can pull our attention that in that moment we may think it's very important but we have to keep an idea of the overview in order to understand the big questions of our life so that our life does revolve more around our meditation practice.

So try these three reflections, taking a dedication of intention, putting it with death & impermanence and the last of the five reflections - to care and not to care, the need to develop more equanimity towards the things that are not that important, even if they seem to be pleasant. Many pleasant things are not that important.
