Question

When we have deep conditioning for things and we know they're unbeneficial, how can we force a letting go?

Answer

We've never taught any one of you to force a letting go. What do I do every retreat with the fire, I hold a fire in my hand and I say that we're going to examine it. So we're going to try to understand the burning, we're going to try to understand it, understand, understand. We've got to look at it again, look at it again. As we understand it, we start to let go, we start to let go. When we understand it fully, we're going to let go. It's through understanding that we let go. It's not through forcing. If you're forcing to let go, then you're not doing the practice as we teach here, that's somebody else's practice.

So if you have deep conditioning for things that you know are unbeneficial, open up to the fact you know it's unbeneficial, reflect on the fact that it's unbeneficial, reflect on the Dukkha inherent in the conditioning that you have. Over and over, reflect on the Dukkha, reflect on the Dukkha. Over and over, look at the burning, look at the burning, look at the burning. How long do you want to burn? Do you want to burn for the rest of your life? It's your choice, right? You can leave this retreat, you can keep burning, or you can just keep using these techniques and try to put out the fire, put out the fire, put out the fire, and then let go of the fire.
