Concerning walking meditation, when is it more appropriate to develop a focused awareness and when is it more appropriate to develop a broader awareness?

Answer

It's not black and white, it's really more personal. But if you feel like you are getting concentrated, zoom in on the feet. Whenever you're feeling scattered, make your awareness broader, because the mind doesn't want to focus in too much. So although it's not a black and white rule, if you are more focused - zoom in, if you're scattered - zoom out.
