Question

What is the best way to cultivate patience and how do we balance patience with the urgency that arises from death reflection?

Answer

Patience can come by understanding the impersonal nature of things, especially understanding cause and effect. That everything arises due to causes and that if we want a certain result we have to sow the causes for it. It's quite an impersonal law. So understanding the Law of Cause and Effect helps us to develop more patience and to sow the causes for results that would be valued. We realize that if we do get impatient and desire things, then that will actually prolong the amount of time before the results come. So by reflecting on the cause and effect relationship, seeing the impersonal nature of things, Anatta, the third characteristic of existence, we understand that everything is not mine, not self.

How do we balance patience with the urgency that arises from death reflection? Here wisdom is needed to understand that we must put our efforts and wisdom together to sow the causes for the results we want. So we put our efforts into understanding the laws of the causes of the mind/body process so that we can be more in harmony with these laws. This also ties in with the Fourth Foundation of Mindfulness where the Buddha talks about developing beneficial qualities, for example, the Seven Factors of Enlightenment. Understanding when they are present, when they are not present, how they arise, and how to make them stronger. This ties in with wisdom. If we're trying to develop ourselves, we must have some understanding of the Law of Cause and Effect and apply this understanding. So with death reflection - we understand we may not have a lot of time to do something, but if we get all agitated about it and just desire the results, they will not arise. So wisdom is needed in order to develop ourselves. Right view comes first.
