Question

How can mental and body awareness in sitting be balanced?

Answer

In a sense, sometimes doing the reflective type meditations and Compassion/Lovingkindness, and other times doing the breath awareness and body awareness. So we have these two main areas of practice. One in which we develop wise thought and one in which we let go of all thought. We want to practice both. We want to have them in balance but the balance is not black and white and it'll be different for different people. It might be 50/50, it might be 60/40 or 40/60.

Keep in mind that the body awareness practice also includes the walking meditation. In walking meditation we are dropping thought, also. Getting this balance is something you have to figure out for yourself. It'll be more personality based and often may change over the years. You may find, especially for a lot of Westerners, because Westerners like to think, the reflections very, very interesting in the beginning and then get into it maybe too much. It might become 90%, and you might even forget about the breath awareness totally. Then later you have to remind yourself, "Well wait a minute I haven't done breath awareness for three months, I'd better do that." Keep in mind the analogy I give with the hammer story. As much as we wouldn't build a special complicated house with only a hammer, we would also not try to build a special complicated house without a hammer. So we want to be able to use all the different tools. It's just natural that some are going to be more appealing and become our favorites. Its just natural due to our personalities but you need to keep that balance and not let one side go down too far.
