Question

Can you suggest any tips on working with subtle boredom? I have a lot of trouble catching it.

Answer

If you think you have boredom and you look at it, become interested in it, then there is no more boredom. It's gone, it's gone away.

The minute you identify, "Oh this is subtle boredom," then you have an object. You have an object to become aware of. So it's only when you can't see it, that you can't identify it. The minute you see it and identify it, then you've got an object to look at. And if you get interested in boredom, then boredom goes away. You can spark your own interest. Any moment of the day you can spark your own interest, no matter how tired, no matter how exhausted you are.

Here's an example I often give. You are on a job, it's been three weeks, and everybody has been working overtime. It's a rush job, it has to be completed, lots of overtime, weekends as well. It's been nonstop for three weeks. Friday afternoon - ahhh, the job's done. Everyone is exhausted. All you want to do is go home, hit the sack, maybe have a drink of juice. You don't want to be bothered with anything. You just want to go home, hit the sack, and sleep 12 or 14 hours. You get to your home, you go to your front door and pinned on it is a note, "Hey, Steve, I'm in town! We haven't seen each other for three years!" Are you going to sleep? No, this is a good friend, you haven't seen him for three years, so what if you are exhausted! The exhaustion is going to go, pffft - disappear out the window. Sure you might drag yourself that evening a bit, but, no, this is your good friend that you haven't seen for three years. This is the only time you're going to get together. Interest - interest can blow away physical tiredness.

So what about mental tiredness? Boredom is part of mental tiredness, it leads into sloth and torpor. If we can blow away physical tiredness from time to time then clearly we can blow away mental tiredness more easily. So it's good to actually ignite interest. The first thing to ask yourself when you think you are bored is, "What do you want?" Boredom is another type of aversion. Boredom means you don't like this moment. If you don't like this moment then you must be comparing it to some other moment that you want. This moment I don't want, I want some other moment. Again the first thing that you ask yourself when you are bored is, "What do I want?" The minute you recognize that you are having desire for something different to now, then you've got something to work with. Then you're not going to be bored any more, you've got stuff to work with.
