Question

In the guided meditation concerning the Ten Paramis I have trouble with the reflection on Energy. The others are more obvious, but having always been an energetic person both pre- and post-Dhamma I'm not sure of what exactly to take note of, or if there is any particular Dhamma Energy that I should recognize.

Answer

I think in this instance it is about being more discriminating in where to direct our energy, because we can be very energetic and direct our energy towards many things that are not so important. So if we link our energy with some wisdom, we know where to direct our energy to be of the most benefit to the development of the Dhamma. Sometimes people have a lot of energy and want to make everything in their life perfect, bringing a lot of energy to all situations. But they overreach themselves and get burnt out because they do not have compassion directing their energy so they can focus on the most important things and care less about other things. So Compassion and Wisdom help us to understand where to direct our energy and how to balance our energy.

This also ties in with the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, because when we look at the Seven Factors of Enlightenment there's energy, but also tranquility. If our energy gets too wired, we forget to also calm the mind in tranquility.

With developing energy with someone who doesn't have it, we need to know types of reflections that help bring about mental energy. Sometimes there's a difference between mental energy and physical energy. The mental energy is more what we're trying to focus on, because sometimes a person may not have a lot of physical energy and yet they can still be developing the Dhamma at that time.

So wisdom helps us to know which type of energy is appropriate to develop at that time. It also helps us to understand where to focus our energy in order to develop our true purpose.
