Question

Please could you say something about the letting go of fixed self-images, especially negative ones.

Answer

Just about everything that we're teaching here is going to help you let go of your fixed self-images, in one way or another. Fixed images come about through dwelling on what we think we are. We simply think, "I am this way, I am this way, I am this way, I am, I am..." We don't teach you to think that way. We teach you to let go of thought when it's a hindrance. We teach you to develop wise thoughts, so therefore if you do this practice, there's not going to be any time at all that you're supposed to practice sitting down thinking, "I am, I am, I am... this way". A fixed image. That's one clear way in which you're going to let go of some of your conditions that make you feel you've a fixed image.

Reflecting on negative past actions is one of the biggest ways people develop a fixed image of self-pity, self-hatred and all their unworthiness. It's by reflecting on what they've done in the past that wasn't very wise. We don't teach that either. We teach reflecting on your good past Kamma. If you're going to develop a fixed image we want you to have a good one. But most people don't have a good one, most people have a negative one and that's really what we're talking about here when we think of fixed-self- images. It's normally a negative one.

When a person has a positive self-image it's not fixed. There's wisdom enough to know that their self-image is changing. The most positive self-image we can have is to understand, "Hey, this self is a changing self". But when people have a negative fixed image, it often comes through dwelling on the past too much and reflecting on our past bad Kamma. So by reflecting on your good Kamma and not dwelling on the past, you're actually going to be able to let go of your fixed self-images, especially the negative ones. Now, if you don't have enough good Kamma to reflect on, if you haven't done enough good things to actually help give yourself enough joy to let go of the negative thoughts, then start making more good Kamma.
