Question

What kind of reflection or Meditation can help you make right decisions about the things you want to do or change in your life, e.g. partners, jobs etc.?

Answer

The Dukkha reflection can help you make good decisions. Considering what can be the Dukkha of this situation compared to what can be the Dukkha of that situation because, by and large, we don't want Dukkha, we want happiness.

When you consider your partners, it might be helpful at times to think about grass and weeds. Say, we want to have a nice yard full of nice grass, a lot of people like that. But what do you get when you get grass? You get weeds. Every nice yard gets weeds. Gardeners come and they pull out the weeds or they spray them or whatever but a week later it will have a couple of more weeds and continually you always get weeds if you want grass. When you think of your partner and you think of all the "grass", the nice things about your partner, you have also got to expect some weeds. It's just normal.

Now, if you don't want the weeds, there is only one way to make sure that your yard will never ever have weeds. Put down cement, no grass, you can't have grass either. So when you think of grass and weeds, and you think of your partner, if the grass is a lot and the weeds are only a little, fine! But if the weeds get too much then you may want to change partners, it's too much to handle. When you are making decisions, think about grass and weeds. This can be in regards to partners or jobs or anything. If the benefits compared to the Dukkha are a lot of benefits and only a little Dukkha, then that's fine. But if you see the Dukkha increasing, reflect on the Dukkha then it will help you to make decisions about your jobs and other things.
