Question

Could you say a little about Renunciation and developing it? Same for Energy.

Answer

Renunciation - in order to bring about Renunciation we have to develop our Compassion, because Renunciation seems almost natural when our compassion has increased. We see some of the things that we have done, or still do now, may not be so skilful for ourselves or others. We may also see that there are things which we just don't need that much anymore.

In order to bring about Renunciation it is quite helpful to develop a sense of Confidence. Then we have more spiritual joy and it is easier to give up things because we have something better. So, if we have trouble giving up some worldly things, which we don't think are very beneficial for us, it may be that we have to look at our spiritual practice and see whether we have enough Joy in the practice. Joy comes from developing more Confidence/Faith and practicing the confidence inspiring objects of meditation. When we have more happiness in the practice it is much easier to give up some of the worldly things which may not be necessary any more.

The same with Energy. Joy and Energy seem to be related. Energy - it is difficult to renew and increase Energy unless we have some Joy and some motivation. So between Compassion and Joy, Compassion is the strong motivator. One side of the practice is opening to Dukkha, this is the more serious side of the practice, developing Compassion, seeing into Dukkha and understanding that it exists, accepting that it exists and making our heart bigger to be able to continue to open to it. This ignites the Compassion that brings about the Energy to develop ourselves and to protect ourselves. On the other hand if we only see Dukkha without the lessening of it and seeing the possibility for the ending of it, and don't have enough confidence in ourselves that we can end it, then it doesn't bring up Energy. So there is one side of the practice seeing Dukkha, and the other side of the practice seeing the ending of Dukkha and having enough Confidence in ourselves to believe that we have the capacity to end it, which brings up Energy.

I mentioned on the first day that the spirit Alavaka asked the Buddha, what is the best wealth to a person in the world and the Buddha says, "Confidence." Alavaka also asks, "How does one cross a flood?" The Buddha replied, "One crosses a flood of birth and death by Confidence." If we don't feel we have the Confidence to end it, we won't have the Energy to do it. So developing Confidence helps in the development of Renunciation and it also helps in the development of Energy. So developing the unselfish emotions is extremely important in having a mature emotional well-being. Renunciation and developing morality is based in compassion for ourselves and others.
