Question

Is sex between consenting unmarried adults contrary to the precepts?

Answer

Not that I know of, if you both are unmarried and if you are not committed to somebody else as to a boyfriend/girlfriend. There is nothing that I know of which says you have to be married if you are an adult in order to have sex. If either person is still in a relationship with someone else but they are just not married by legal standards, then of course that would be breaking a precept.
