Question

Please can you explain how Right Livelihood looks like for a householder. What are the main priorities?

Answer

Right Livelihood is a livelihood that doesn't cause harm for society, that is the number one requirement. I think, and I don't' know it all by heart, but I think according to the scriptures it does say that Right Livelihood does not involve killing, the production of weapons and the production of intoxicants that confuse the mind. There might be a little more there, but that is the best I can remember. So when we think of weapons, of course that is going to produce harm generally. When we think of intoxicants that confuse the mind, that is going to produce harm. When we think about killing directly, then of course that causes harm. I just remembered another one, that is selling or bartering with human life, basically slavery.

So we look at these four things that I just mentioned, and of course they are all causing harm. So Right Livelihood is something that is not going to produce harm. Yesterday or the day before we had a question about selling something that is useless, so this is a finer detail, a finer thing to look at within ourselves, to ask ourselves, regarding our livelihood, not only does it not cause harm, but what type of harm? I just talked about big ones, killing, wars, selling humans The little ones can be the creation of ignorance. So that could be termed harm, it is not specific, but it is something to look at within yourself. So although a job might be right livelihood for someone else, it might not be right livelihood for you
