Question

Why do we tend to judge others?

Answer

Again, like I said yesterday - there is a balance here. We have to discriminate, because if we are hanging out with the wrong people we can become influenced in a negative way. So we have to discriminate about whether their qualities are something that we want to be around. As far as judging, there is a difference between discrimination and aversion. When our judging goes into aversion, that is a problem. Just judging for the sake of judging, it is focusing on others rather than ourselves. It is a natural thing to try to figure out the world and what is wise to be around and what is not. People who don't discriminate enough allow themselves to get into situations so that they are not able to bring forth the effort to prevent.

The judging that is just based on appearances is prejudice. This often arises due to the fear. An antidote to fear is compassion. So if we develop more compassion, we'll be less likely to judge people for things that are not useful to judge them on, appearances, etc.
