Question

If I am imprisoned or captured within Mara, how can I come out of this? It is difficult when I think I am part of Mara, because of wrong view.

Answer

Every moment that you are mindful that you are stuck, that is a moment of breaking the prison. Mindfulness is not Mara. Every time that you are mindful and aware you have broken out of your prison. Mara loves you to be unaware, Mara controls you when you are not aware, Mara is in charge at those times, but the minute you are aware that you are lost, then you have broken the chain. Why is it that we teach the mental noting technique? There are a lot of different techniques within Buddhism, so why is it that we teach the noting technique? Because when you are lost, especially lost in aversions, future, past and all that worries and fears, that is Mara. The minute you note that you are lost, ah, Mara is gone, you are in control again. The mental noting itself is breaking out of the prison, you are not captured anymore. The more you add these moments, the more you build them up, the more mindful you are throughout the day, the more you stay out of jail.
