Question

After the intense meditation like last night concerning refugees, prisoners, etc. I find my Dukkha petty, so little compared with some of the situations. Therefore I'm having difficulties having Compassion for myself.

Answer

Unless we are fully enlightened, we all have greed, hatred and ignorance, we are still bound in the cycle of Samsara. We are responsible for our actions speech and thoughts, and we have to reap the results of them. So, we have to be very, very careful.

How easy it may be to go off the path, just by the people we hang out with, or the situations that we're in. So we see ourselves as another human being clouded by ignorance, and we understand the power of this ignorance. However we can't get complacent and think that just because we understand now, we will always be like that. There is always the potential (until you become a Stream Enterer) for decline. If we understand this in ourselves, we have Compassion for ourselves. We don't underestimate the power of ignorance. That's basically it, being more humble allows us to be more Compassionate towards ourselves, and bring more Compassion to ourselves.

We are all subject to birth, aging, disease and death. We may have good fortune now, but tomorrow we may be paralyzed. We don't know. The future is uncertain. We are subject to aging. If we've been around very old people we understand our memory may disappear. We understand the potential for Dukkha, and therefore we can have Compassion for ourselves. We're seeing more of the big picture after we've focused on these Dukkha situations. Seeing the big picture allows us to have more Compassion for ourselves.

However, we don't want to go the other way, where we go off the Middle Path and then get into self-pity. That's why we have the D/D Reflection. We have to put ourselves back with the rest of humanity and realize we are all subject to aging, disease and death and being bound by Kamma.
