Question

During the meditation on Forgiveness, I found I could compassionately understand from another's view, and genuinely give forgiveness. The next day, I am brooding over the same event. How can I move on from there?

Answer

One of the suttas, for those of you who have the "20 Suttas" by email from us, one of them is called the Canki Sutta. In it the Buddha talks to a young, 16-year-old Brahmin priest. He explains to the Brahmin priest how to arrive at the truth. He talks about visiting your teachers, listening to your teachers, respecting what they say, remembering what they say, thinking about what they say, putting it into practice, working hard, and so on. He explains all this to the young 16-year-old, and says, "That's how you attain truth". The 16-year-old thinks he's got it now, "Right! Okay, I understand. That's great. Thank you Mr. Buddha, that's right on."

I will say, on the side, that this is one place where I think the Buddha is having fun. I should elaborate for those of you who haven't read the Sutta yet. The Buddha's talking to a young, 16-year-old Brahmin priest in front of 500 other Brahmin priests, who have allowed the young fellow to represent them, because they feel he's so bright. So, as the Buddha's talking to this 16-year-old, 500 other Brahmin priests are listening.

Then after the young Brahmin priest says "Okay I see, I understand, thank you", the Buddha says, "But young man, that's not the final arrival at truth." The young man thinks he had it all worked out, intellectually, but now he has to say, "Well! Okay, what is the final arrival at truth?" The Buddha says, "Young man, you must do as I said, over and over and over and over!"

Yes! So, if you've found that the forgiveness meditation worked last night, you've touched it working. Today, all of a sudden you're back with that attitude, "Yeah, yeah, they deserve it, blah, blah..." Fine. You have to do that forgiveness meditation over, and over, and over!
