Question

Are there any types of aversion the D/D method is not appropriate for? E.g., having aversion to someone like Saddam Hussein.

Answer

The D/D method is more directed towards people who are lost in Self-pity than for these types of examples. For these types of examples, it's more appropriate probably to reflect on the ignorance of human beings and the conditions that cause these types of wrong view to arise, focusing on the ignorance rather than using the D/D.

The D/D is more for universalizing our Dukkha, understanding that we're getting caught in wrong thoughts about ourselves, and not accepting that we are part of humanity, or not accepting a truth that is true for everyone. With Saddam Hussein, it's more about focusing on the hindrances externally, and human ignorance, and universalizing what human ignorance can do in the world. He's an example of that.

Reflect about how strong ignorance, and the wish for power, is sometimes. Consider that when wrong view and ignorance come together in this sense, the results can be very detrimental for everyone.

Focus on people like Saddam as a baby. He came into the world an infant. What are the conditions that conditioned this baby to think in the way he did? What are the wrong views that helped form the way he related to the world? Focus on how he ended up, how he left the world.

So, focusing on the birth and death of human beings, and Kamma, that he is the owner of his own Kamma, often helps with these extreme examples, rather than the D/D.
